Feeling Rusty

This summer I have not really pulled out my face paints. I was sure that I would be face painting as a side job, but quickly found out how difficult it is to get people to appreciate what you do. Most people do not want to pay for a face painter. They will always think it is too expensive.

I am now just face painting recreationally (expensive hobby) and for friends/family.

Today is the last day of summer vacation so of course, the paints came out. My kids had some friends over and they where watching a movie about a three headed shark. Yeah, not any better than it sounds, but a ton of fun for the kids.

Naturally, they wanted me to paint sharks. I found a picture of a great white shark on Pintrest and went to work. I found myself a little rusty. I struggled more to find the consistency I wanted in my paints. Also, I had a harder time getting my brush strokes the way I like.

All this tells me that I need to keep up with my practice. This will mean more face painting all year long.

Anyways, here are my sharks if anyone is interested...also a little seahorse and my first ever dolphin!!

Addicted to Craft Supplies

I am sure I am not the only one out there that has a small problem with craft supplies. I have to avoid going to places like Hobby Lobby and Joann's. If I go into those kinds of stores with a few items to buy, I come out with at least a bag full if not more. What is it about the red clearance tags that makes them so hard to resist?

I have decided that I need to make a plan to USE the supplies I have accumulated. I tend to be very scattered when it comes to what I do. I have multiple projects going at once so of course nothing gets finished.

Well, NO MORE!!! (I just heard this in Scott Pilgrim's' voice.)

I am going to go on a project binge. I got started last night organizing my supplies. I hope to have this stage finished by the end of the day. Then tomorrow the projects start!!!

I will have to add some pics of the things I get done so keep an eye out!

Oh, and if you are wondering how the "face painting" at field day went...let me just say I had a blast!!! I painted a ton of spiders on little boys arms, I did some hearts and I got to use a split cake to do rainbows.

I ordered the rainbow split cake on the pretext that I had volunteered to do face painting at the field day. I am so glad I did. There where a large number of kids that wanted rainbows and it was SUPER fast to paint the rainbow and then add some clouds. I LOVED it.

Face painting JUMP

I have been face painting for over a year now...on my own kids of course. This coming Friday is the "field day" for my 2 year old. I asked the program director is I could volunteer to do face painting for the children. She said she would be delighted to have me. I will be doing some quick little designs on the children's arms. (This is so that the kids can see it and enjoy it.)

I am really excited. The last volunteer project I did was vacation bible school this past summer. I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Since then I have really been trying to find other areas I can volunteer my time without cutting into my family time.

FRIDAY...all day. The children range from baby to 5 year olds. Both of my older children attended this program. I really love the teachers and the atmosphere they provide.

So with a big smile on my face I am jumping into trying out what I already do at home...paint on little kids. I am going to provide only a few options to paint so that the kids don't get overwhelmed with choices.

I hope I can sleep on Thursday night.

Thanks for stopping by,

Face Painting

First design ever done.

One year I picked up a "character make-up kit" from Walmart on clearance after Halloween. The kit was under a dollar and came not just with some paints but with a little instruction book for three different face designs.

That was the beginning of what has become a little hobby for me, to the benefit of my children. During this last summer I would paint their faces once a week. We would go on Pintrest for them to find a picture, then I would try to recreate it.

I am in no way an artist...I need to get that out in the open. My kids love to tell me what an artist I am, but that is far from the truth. I have never been very good at drawing. I get very frustrated with symmetry. If I can get the right side to look awesome, chances are the left will not look as good.

(Keeping the previous thought in mind...) My kids LOVE that they can come to me and ask for a face design. When we go to a new animated movie, they usually come to me for a design directly related to what we are about to see.
For Despicable Me 2

Painting their faces has taught me a few things:
1. I do not have to be perfect. The design can be a little off and still look great! (Which has bleed over into other parts of my life.)
2. If you can do something small to make your kids smile, do it. My kids love going out when I have painted their faces and telling complete strangers that their mommy did it.
3. There will always be people out there better than you and that is OK. (Some of the pins I have found have blown my mind.)
4. Just try. I have not attended any face painting classes or even painting classes, but it is really fun just to try. (And this is not about only face painting.)

Hope I have inspired you to try something...maybe face painting!!! This is my Pinterest board with face painting ideas: http://www.pinterest.com/yadiwyatt/face-painting-ideas/
